How to Get a Slovenian Passport and What It Costs

Potnik s potnim listom in vozovnico na letališču

Slovenian citizens can apply for a Slovenian passport at any administrative unit (upravna enota) in Slovenia or at a Slovenian embassy or consulate abroad. It is normally produced within five working days, adults get a passport valid for ten years, and since 1 June 2026 the new fifth-generation ten-year passport costs €58.87.

In short: You need the reference number of a digital photo taken by a registered e-photographer. Adults receive a 10-year passport, children aged 3 to 18 a 5-year one and children under 3 a 3-year one. If you are in a hurry, you can pay extra for priority production by the next working day.

Where and how to apply for a Slovenian passport

You can apply at any administrative unit in Slovenia, regardless of where your permanent address is. Slovenian citizens living abroad apply at the nearest embassy or consulate of the Republic of Slovenia. In genuinely urgent cases, such as medical treatment, illness or the death of a close relative abroad, the Ministry of the Interior can also issue a passport.

The procedure is simple, but it cannot be completed fully online because you submit the application in person. Applicants over 12 also have their fingerprints taken, and these are stored on the chip of the biometric passport.

What to bring

  • your current passport or another photo ID,
  • the reference number of your digital photo from an e-photographer,
  • cash or a payment card for the form and the administrative fee,
  • for a child, the other parent’s consent where the law requires it.

Passport photos and how old they can be

In Slovenia you normally no longer bring a printed photo. A registered e-photographer takes the picture and uploads it to an electronic repository, and at the administrative unit you simply give its reference number. The ministry publishes the list of e-photographers on the gov.si portal.

Having a passport photo taken at a photographer's studio

A common question is how old a passport photo can be. You may reuse a photo as long as it still shows your true appearance, and as a rule it should not be older than one year. Printed photos are accepted only in exceptional cases, for example when illness or disability makes a digital photo impossible, or when you apply at a mission abroad.

How much a Slovenian passport costs and how long it is valid

With the new generation of travel documents, issued since 1 June 2026, prices rose by roughly ten euros. Validity depends on the holder’s age, and the price depends on validity.

Holder’s age Validity Price (standard)
18 or older 10 years €58.87
3 to 18 5 years €52.07
under 3 3 years €47.97

You do not need to replace a valid older-generation passport; it remains valid until it expires. If fingerprints cannot be taken for temporary health reasons, the passport is issued with one year of validity.

Waiting times and priority production

After you apply, the passport is normally produced and handed to the post within five working days and then delivered to your home. In practice, the real wait is for a free appointment at the administrative unit, and these fill up quickly before summer and the holidays. The ministry regularly publishes waiting times for individual administrative units, so it pays to check where an appointment is available sooner.

If you are travelling within a few days, ask for priority production when you apply. You pay an additional administrative fee, and the passport is produced and handed to the post no later than the next working day. You can also give an email address to be notified when the document is ready or has been posted.

  1. Check your passport’s expiry date at least two months before you travel.
  2. Get a photo reference number from an e-photographer.
  3. Book an appointment at an administrative unit or come during office hours.
  4. Apply at least ten days before departure if you want to avoid paying for priority production.

Passport or ID card

For travel within the European Union and the European Economic Area, a valid Slovenian ID card is enough, and bilateral agreements also allow entry to Albania and Switzerland with it. For the United Kingdom and most countries outside Europe you need a passport. Some countries require the passport to remain valid for several months after your return, so always check the rules before booking.

Passport with entry stamps

The Slovenian passport opens a lot of doors without a visa. In January 2026 Slovenia ranked fifth in the world on the Henley Passport Index, and Slovenian passport holders can travel to 184 destinations without a prior visa.

Lost or stolen passport

In Slovenia, a lost or stolen passport must be reported within eight days at any administrative unit; a police report alone is not enough. If it happens abroad, report it at a Slovenian mission within 30 days, or at an administrative unit within eight days of returning. Describe the circumstances and date as precisely as you can, as the official will draw up a record of your report. Official information on all personal documents is available on the Slovenian government portal gov.si.
